Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.
I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
As an MD, I know that abortion is a very complicated medical issue. The health and well being of the mother and potential child depend on multiple factors, calculations of risk and benefit. This is not a simple black and white issue. Each individual case has to be judged on its individual merits. Complicated medical issues are best decided in private between a patient and their physician. A one-size-fits all law in this area makes no sense and will inevitably have negative consequences because it cannot consider and account for the pros and cons of each individual case in a single law. So not only does the federal government has no right to invade the privacy of the doctor-patient relationship, there can be horrific consequences if they do. At the same time, public health measures that help young women avoid unwanted pregnancy are of tremendous value. These prevent women from ever having to be in the terrible position of having to make such a difficult decision.
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?
I think SS should be paid for with progressive income tax rather than payroll tax, which is a regressive tax, meaning it hurts low income workers the most.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
THE PENATAGON BUDGET!! It is catastrophically overblown, 50% of discretionary spending. We could use that money for human needs or to pay down our overblown Debt. It is grows every year with bipartisan zeal because it's a grift. The money goes to contractors who turn around and fill the campaign coffers.
Under what circumstances should taxpayers help pay off existing student loans?
As much as possible.
Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
It means that the US government should not take sides in matters of religion. The government should be neutral. And discrimination against anyone for their religion, or lack thereof, should be illegal.
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.
I support the elimination of private healthcare insurance.
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
Medicare for All accomplishes this. 20 of 22 studies that have looked at the cost of Medicare for All found it is less expensive than our current expenditures, up to 15% less expensive. Since we spend about 30 trillion per year on healthcare, that means a savings of up to 500 Billion dollars every year. That is an amazing number. AND we cover everyone. No more medical bills, period. It will relieve employers from the burden of paying for health insurance just as it will relieve families of the same burden. The cost, which is lower, can be distributed fairly by progressive income tax.
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?
America's experience with terrorism is largely a biproduct of our foreign policy. From the time the US was founded we were exapansionist - we started by forcing Native Americans off their land with campaigns of violence. Later we went overseas to acquire naval dominion over important trading routes such as our colony in the Phillipines, which America held for half a century after acquiring it in a War with Spain. The independence movement in the Phillipines was fierce and the US response was violent - even including waterboarding, what was called at the time the 'water cure.' Continuing into the 20th Century American economic interests continued to drive foreign policy in ways that disregarded human rights. The CIA orchestrated a coup against Iranian democracy in "Operation Ajax" in 1953, now public record. The US installed the Shah, who played ball with Western Oil Interests. But the people of Iran didn't like the Shah. This led to the Iranian revolution of 1979. And so on.
I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be abolished.
State and federal funds should be denied to any public or private entity, including but not limited to sanctuary cities, that are not in compliance with immigration laws.
Employers should be required to use E-verify to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
The reason we have so many illegal immigrants is that we have made it very easy for an illegal immigrant to come to America and get work and education without having to show evidence of citizenship. If we change that, there is no need for any walls. However this change must be part of comprehensive immigration reform that also grants amnesty for everyone we've allowed in so far - because we only have ourselves to blame for making it so easy. Those two measures have to come together. And the third necessary piece is opening up channels for more legal immigration, since legal immigration is good for America.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I believe in freedom of religion 100%. Each person should be free to worship or not worship as they see fit. We should ensure that freedom and be sure that discrimination on the basis of religion is not allowed. Anyone who discriminates on the basis of religion, or the lack thereof, should meet with legal consequences. The government has absolutely no place picking winners and losers in matters of personal belief. That is up to every individual. And that freedom must be protected by the government, whose responsibility it is to make sure no one is ever discriminated against for their private religious beliefs or lack thereof.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
I support Medicare for All single Payer healthcare because I want to see every American get the healthcare they need and deserve, and I know that Medicare for All will accomplish this, as well as save money. I want to ban fracking because humanity is facing great and serious peril in the form of Climate Change. As I write this the west coast is engulfed in flames from fires fueled by Climate Change, and the Gulf Coast was just hit with Hurricane Sally, bringing more death and destruction to our shores. This is a choice we have made to bring this misery on ourselves. We can make a better choice. We can choose to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. This means we must ban fracking. It will also free us from our dependence of the Middle East, meaning we can disentagle our military from the Middle East, which means less terrorism and more safety for all Americans.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
I'm a nice guy. I have a wife and 2 kids and 2 cats. I want to see a future where all Americans live in peace, comfort, safety, health, and happiness. The government can help bring that future by ensuring justice - insuring we get the things we all deserve.
Mandatory minimum sentencing should be required and enforced for violent crimes.
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
Antonin Scalia in the Heller decision clarified that 'like most rights, the right to bear arms is not an unlimited right.' It is not a right for ANY person to carry ANY weapon in ANY place at ANY time. So the more dangerous weapons such as automatic weapons and bazookas and large magazine weapons can and should be banned. We need to have universal background checks. And we need red-flag laws so that dangerous individuals don't acquire weapons that could be used to attack innocent people.
I support BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanction) against Israel if they refuse to allow the creation of a Palestinian state.
I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
The Electoral College should be abolished.
In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?
1. Medicare for All 2. Ranked Choice Voting (to allow for more than 2 parties in our politics) 3. Ban fracking 4. Federal Jobs Guarantee 5. Living Wage 6. Universal Free Pre-K and public college/trade school
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Racism is a threat to peace because it is a threat to justice.
