Free enterprise and the right to private property turn mankind's natural self-interest into the most productive economic system there is.
George Washington's comment that “Religion and morality are the essential pillars of civil society” is still true today.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
My beliefs are influenced by my Catholic upbringing, but I am not a practicing Catholic.
Considering all issues (social, economic, national security, etc.), which of these best describes you?
Please defend your answer to the previous question by referencing your publicly available track record.
I have acted on and advanced my conservative beliefs on the job as a trial court judge where I have earned a reputation for following the law instead of making law. I pursue justice one case at a time based on the unique facts of each case and the applicable law. I also act on and advance my beliefs by serving as a volunteer translator for dissident Cuban writers on the website www.translatingcuba.com. I have translated almost 400 different writings to give a greater voice to the people of Cuba who are yearning to secure their own God-given rights. The Obama administration has marginalized and ignored Cuba's dissidents, and I feel that I strike a blow for liberty with each translation.

Additional comment from candidate:
I am offering 30 years of experience as a briefing attorney, prosecutor and felony trial court judge to advance the mission of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. That mission is to resolve criminal cases on appeal, nothing else. My opponents are offering much less in terms of experience with criminal appeals, felony cases and death penalty litigation, the things that the Court of Criminal Appeals handles. One of my opponents is a personal injury trial specialist and former member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association. He was never a prosecutor. He refuses to follow higher court precedent on criminal procedure if he disagrees with it. As a result he has wrongly suppressed evidence of crime and wrongly dismissed criminal cases many times. A trial court judge who refuses to follow the law undermines the rule of law. In my 21 years as a felony trial court judge, I have earned a reputation for being impartial and following the law.
